Biodiversity Conservation Program for Mata da Virginia

Biodiversity Conservation Program for Mata da Virginia

With its 2,189.60 hectares of remaining seasonal semideciduous forest, also known as inland Atlantic Forest, Mata da Virgínia, located on Fazenda Cambuhy, is the largest forest fragment in the northwest of the state of São Paulo, and is of significant importance for the conservation of regional fauna and flora.

Within several floristic characterization studies carried out in the Mata da Virgínia, 187 plant species were sampled, 11 of which are at risk of extinction in the wild. It is also worth mentioning the discovery of a new species, Cordia tarodae.

In regard to fauna, various studies have been carried out in the Mata da Virgínia from the mid-20th century to the present day. Despite the efforts made in years of research, results showed that, given the importance of the biodiversity sheltered by the Mata da Virgínia, there were some knowledge gaps for groups not covered in previous surveys, such as arachnids, butterflies, dung beetles, native bees, ants, reptiles, birds, small mammals, and bats.

Concurrent with this demand to complete the inventory, it was noticed that population data were scarce for endangered species with extremely sensitive populations, such as carnivorous mammals, as well as for species that cause environmental and economic impacts, such as invasive exotic species (wild boars and European hares) and highly abundant native species (capybaras).

In order to meet this demand for information, the Mata da Virgínia biodiversity conservation program was carried out in a partnership between Cambuhy and Seleção Natural – Inovação em Projetos Ambientais. The project lasted three years and involved 23 researchers.

During this period, a total of 761 species of fauna were recorded, including 12 endangered species, two new records for the state of São Paulo, and three species new to science. Furthermore, this program generated various data that can support long-term goals for the conservation of endangered species and the management of highly abundant exotic and native species.
